Beth and I have been faithful viewers of the show House for several seasons. I think we have seen almost all the episodes either during their actual season or in syndication. We really loved the beginning seasons and tried to tolerate the last couple. It was easier in the beginning to get past the fact that he was an ass because the writing was so good, the diseases so puzzling, and the characters so lovable.
Lately, every time they tried to make us understand House or his ways, he ultimately made a decision based on what was good for him and only him.
I am sure there are many women and caregivers out there who love House, but that is purely because you think you can save him. Or change him. Ask Wilson and Cuddy if you think that is going to happen.
As for puzzling diseases, I am sure they could have puzzled us for several more years, but it has really become tiring for me to watch them be so wrong for 50 minutes and diagnose Sarcoidosis and Lupus, and some STD only to finally get to the actual problem. He inhaled a stick.
So last night we watched the finale, finally. We missed it the actual night of and forgot to DVR it. Beth had to sign us up for a free trial of HuluPlus to watch it.
So there we were, watching the dark puzzling end of House. We had fallen for many of the spoiler alerts previously, so the suspense was gone. We knew House was not going to die or go to prison, but that was it. And the characters that they had come back for cameos were interesting, but without Cuddy, ultimately unfulfilling.
It was time for the show to move on. I am glad we don't have to watch Wilson die. And I am worried about the diagnostic center at Princeton Plainsboro. Will Chase be able to become House? How many times did House come up with the answer to the puzzle by staring off into space and seeing some clue while his team cleaned up the latest spewed blood from the patient. I am not sure Chase can make that happen.
Perhaps I have not fully separated the show from reality just yet.
What were your favorite House moments? Mine were when he worked at the clinic and spent the 5 minutes with a patient. Something funny or interesting typically happened in there that got wrapped into a tidy package much more quickly that the patient upstairs. And, it rarely turned out to be something ending with -dosis.

Is that a balloon in your knee or are you just happy to see me?
May 28, 2012
I wrote and email to my sister in Atlanta yesterday to see what kind of vacation plans they had this summer, and she wrote back, ' What happened to your blog?" She wrote other things too, but also asked about the blog.
Well, I am not really sure what has happened. I think the biggest thing is that my life has become about two very uninteresting things lately, The Target and my knee.
About 5-6 weeks ago I sprained my knee taking up the tack strips for the old carpet in our basement. It is a real testament to how good a shape you are in when you can sprain something by kneeling. However, it did confirm my lifelong question as to whether or not I should have become a monk.
As a result, I have had two weeks of swelling, a day when it looks like I am going to start healing, a day when I do something bad for my knee, and then two more weeks of swelling. Bad things for my knee have been mostly centered around walking around The Target, kneeling on the floor to straighten/fill a shelf, or carrying heavy stuff on a bad knee. There was one instance though during which I helped CJ when the other referee did not show up for his soccer games by stepping in to ref two games with him. That was not the cure for a swollen knee surprisingly enough. AND, I gave CJ all the money from the two games. I may like that kid a little too much.
Thusly and therefore, I have spent most of my days off sitting on the couch with an ice bag trying to get the swelling down. I get well enough to go back to work. I also sleep with one eye open so that Beth does not smother me and my knee in our sleep. As you are finding out, this does not make for good blog fodder.
So this weekend, I am healing and enjoying the fact that Beth and CJ are out of school for the summer. These guys are way fun to be around and are very nice to me and my knees. We took the weekend to do very little and watch some movies. We watched both Mission Impossible III and IV. They turned out to be excellent action films that kept us on the edge of our seats for a couple hours each. Beth and CJ picked out those two. I picked one called Haywire which was also supposed to be an action film about a female spy done wrong who kicks everyone's ass, but it was dimly lit and they had to talk a lot about the ass-kicking which takes away the appeal.
I still have two days off left and it is going to be 90+ degrees outside. Not sure what that means for today, but it should be relaxing.
Since you are finding out why I haven't been blogging, I will take the opportunity to wrap up with one revelation I had for myself yesterday during service. The theme was that we can all be Evangelists about what we believe in some form or another without having bad hair and a bad suit.
I have decided that the youngsters at my store need some of the wisdom I can impart unto them. I am going to start eating my lunch in the break room instead of in front of my computer and have conversations with people. Since the people at my store have a great affinity for the game show network, we may just speak of who has the better bid for the showcase showdown, but who knows? We may actually talk about how they can learn to be better leaders and better people. I can be that guy for some of these people. Is this because I think I am a better person than most of them? Heck no! However, I do know a good person when I see one. And I can use this knowledge to help some of the people I see are having a bad day.
Maybe this will work, maybe not. I won't know until I give it a try. Here goes something...

What is the 411 on 420 anyway?
March 31, 2012
CJ left town yesterday headed to Centerville, Ohio. He is on spring break this week and really knows all the best spring break destinations.
Actually, CJ runs the light board for the high school's theater department. In the fall, they performed a play called, "Piece of my Heart". It is the story of 6 women who went off to the Vietnam War as nurses, USO performers, Red Cross nurses, or Army nurses.
The play went off so well that they were invited to Centerville this weekend to have their play adjudicated. They are one of only five schools selected to have their whole play judged. Impressive. I have seen it once and it was very well done, though not as much fun to watch as their spring production, Footloose.
So the only contact we have had with our baby since he left at 1:00 yesterday afternoon, was a text at 10:00 last night saying the play had gone off perfectly. Therefore, I know he is alive. I guess he did not think I was serious when I said I wanted a text or email every 15 minutes.
That leaves Beth and myself with some free time today. We have some shopping to do, but it is only 8:07 and I don't want the stores to find me too eager.
I thought about playing some video games this morning, but Beth is watching television and it is probably better if I don't play anyway. I am not that good, but I still want to win. Sometimes I do okay depending on who else is on line playing some Modern Warfare 3 at that time.
I find there are 3 groups of players that are really good-teens, Mexicans, and pot smokers. I can identify which class they are in from their voices, their background music, or their call sign. With the teens, it is usually their voices as they actually sound like 8 year-olds over the headset. The Mexicans speak Spanish, have Latin music playing, and usually have "MEX" in their call sign. The pot heads are usually yelling up the stairs to their mom what they want to eat next, or they are talking to their buddies about why they are missing work, or they have "420" in their call sign.
The other night I was doing especially bad at the game, but I figured out the problem. The game waves were full of players who were pot smoking teenage Mexicans. I did not stand a chance.
Beth is done with the television so I may go play some. Since it is 8:15 in the morning on a Saturday, chances are the three main high performing groups are still asleep, sleeping it off, or telling mom they will be up in a couple minutes. We'll see.

I also give him Jack Daniels for his cough
March 13, 2012
Hopefully we have escaped the ill winds of the past few weeks here at Casa Steve. The tornadoes that blew through the area missed our community and my brother's house down in Louisville too. There were lost lives not too far from either one of us, so we were truly blessed on that one. It never got close enough to my house for electricity to be lost or a trip to the basement, but my brother and his family did have to go to their basement. My nephew was the last one to arrive downstairs since he had to secure his valuable possessions-XBox, IPod, and underwear. Smart kid.
I have nearly survived the remodel process at my store and we have our grand opening with the new PFresh area on March 25th. I can then think about taking a vacation after Easter which seems far away right now, but will be here before I know it.
And finally, we have all three survived illness at Steve's hacienda. I had a sinus infection followed by rather serious allergy symptoms. It usually goes in reverse order, but my body decided to shake things up this time. Thank goodness for Allegra D and its healing properties.
Then my son had his turn with allergies and an antibiotic-also for a sinus infection. Genetics are awesome. Thank God we are not females or we both would have gotten yeast infections. That's the equivalent, right?
Then the worst of all possibilities happened, MOM GOT SICK!!!! Things were thrown off kilter here at Sanctuario de Esteban.
How will CJ and Dad survive? Should I go buy new underwear and clothes now? How long do you plan on milking this? Good, God, milk? How does this arrive in our refrigerator? Do we have cows outside? Do squirrels provide milk? Are my hands too big to procure the milk from the squirrels?
Beth does not get allergies. She hangs around sniffling sneezing school kids for fun. She gets sick. The congestion was messing her up the most once she solved the runny nose problem. You may think it's funny, but it's snot.
When CJ was three, he had been bothered by a stuffy nose for several days and was miserable. I decided to go to the store and solve the problem. I bought a kid's version of Afrin for stuffy noses. It worked like a charm, but is apparently not considered the best nose alternative for children. However, when Beth went to squirt CJ's nose the next night before bedtime with regular old saline spray, CJ cried and said, "Daddy gives me the flat bottle so I can breathe." He had chosen breathing over the possible side effects of nose bleeds. He lost his argument that day.
So what did Beth come home with Saturday night after a couple days not being able to breathe? THE FLAT BOTTLE! She had decided that a three year old knowing the difference was good enough for her. She can breathe now, but can she handle any further brain damage?
I guess we will soon find out.

I prefer the boiling lava hot version.
February 20, 2012
We were in The Target yesterday after church for a few quick errands and to check up on my peeps. It turned into a longer stay than expected due to some issues I needed to resolve, but I did talk my lead team member down off the ledge before I left. I should work for SWAT. Do they talk people off ledges or shoot them down? Not sure.
Anyway, while we were shopping, we decided to take advantage of a "2fer" gift card offer and buy two packs of toilet paper. I know! Extravagant much!
So as we were talking about what people would say about us buying this bounty of toilet paper (because people will judge), CJ knew exactly what people would be saying.
"Boy, they must eat a bunch of Hot Pockets"
Here is why he came up with that.

How come Scooby Doo and Dick Clark never get older?
February 14, 2012
Happy Valentines Day!
As we speak, hearts are being broken in elementary classrooms all across the country. Do you remember exchanging Valentines in grade school? Did your school have the unwritten, semi-mandatory rule about everyone getting a Valentine from everyone? I do not know if they still do that, or ever did in your school, but I think I have heard of such things CJ is 15 and would only care about a Valentine's gift if it involved him eating chocolate. I was not one of the hundreds of moms in The Target yesterday buying cards and candy.
I gotta tell ya, 'cause I know you all can't get enough of my Target stories, that it was really awesome to see all those folks buying stuff yesterday. My store is going through a remodel right now and things are in a bit of disarray. Oh, it bugs! As you go through this, you sometimes get caught up in it and forget that you are there to sell stuff. Fortunately, we remembered in time to be ready for this onrush of guests yesterday.
So back to my original thought on elementary school Valentines exchange. My grade school (St Albert the Great in Louisville, Ky) did not have such a rule. It actually made things a bit more exciting. You never knew who was actually going to get you a valentine, and if one came from a girl-woot! Pretty sure none of us back in the '70s said woot, but I am trying to relate.
So there I was, in the 5th or 6th grade knowing I was giving cool Valentines to my guy friends, probably with Ponch and Jon on them, or Spiderman, or Superman, or Scooby Doo; but also holding a couple of "special" ones for the girls I had a crush on. I remember that if you exchanged one with a girl, it was a big deal. It was very likely that if you gave one to her, and she had one for you, you were going to be married someday. That is how things worked back then.
So in the 5th grade, I had one ready for Regina Gamboa. I had it bad. She was short, cute, and Filipino. We would arm wrestle and I would push her down and do all the things that boys do when they are trying to woo a fellow 5th grader.
In the 6th grade, it was Lauren Johnson. I think hair pulling was my big move that year.
As an aside, I found that this technique does not work when you are working at a department store with your future wife. I was about to get a running start to knock Beth into a rack of Coca Cola denim, cause I really liked her a lot, when I was clued in that that technique died on the playground in 8th grade. Good to know.
I know I will be ruining the suspense, but I cannot remember if I got a valentine from any of these PYTs back then. I will guess not for two reasons. First, we are not married and that was the rule. Second, I was a real dork and there were not a line of girls coming to my yard with milk shakes.
Now I am in the 41st grade (I was held back a couple years) and actually got my Valentine a gift. We do not usually exchange because every day is Valentine's day at our house. However, I bought Beth a book. CJ and I are VERY excited about the movie version of The Hunger Games coming out next month. Beth has never read the book. We would very much like to take our best girl with us to the movie, but if you do not know who Katniss Everdeen is or anything about the love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale; you will be lost at the movie.
I hope you all get what you want for Valentine's day. I know I did. Woot!

Were the7 Dwarfs related?
January 27, 2012
Did you ever try to take a nap and your brain got in the way?
I worked late last night and got up with Beth and CJ before they left for school today. That equates to about 6 hours of sleep. Actually, that isn't bad, but I have to work late again tonight. Two midnight closes in a row is hard on this old man. So I tried to take a nap this morning.
I turned on our electric blanket that we use as a mattress warmer, and I did not drink coffee. And I laid there. My body was comfortable with the situation, but my brain was AWAKE. Oddly enough, dwarfs were running around in my cranium. Even though they are height challenged, they were not literally running around inside my head. I was simply thinking about dwarfs.
Why? Two reasons. First, I watch the drama Once Upon a Time and the 7 dwarfs were introduced last week. Second, the crossword I am working on now is called Snow White's Employment Agency. It asks questions like, What is a bad occupation for Sneezy? Answer, Floral Arranger. Clever, right?
But let's look more closely at the dwarfs in the drama I watched. The first thing you will notice, is that these dudes are not all that short. They are about the same height as Snow White. Most of them would still need help dunking a basketball, but they sure aren't joining the wrestling circuit anytime soon.
As an aside, I worked for a boss once who was very afraid of midgets-or little people. It is difficult to be politically correct sometimes when the people in question still call themselves midgets if they are on the midget wrestling circuit. Probably not the most accurate source of political correctness, but still. So this boss of mine went to King's Island for Fear Fest and did okay with zombies trying to eat his brain and IRS agents looking at his tax return, but then they had little people wrestling, and he lost it. Like clowns for some people, I guess.
Anyway, Snow White's friends helped rescue her and Grumpy from a jail cell last week. The dwarf leading the rescue team was little known, and apparently long forgotten, Stealthy. Yes, Stealthy. He gets killed during the rescue attempt, thus leaving us with only 7 dwarfs-Doc, Grumpy, Sleepy, Dopey, Sneezy, Bashful, and Happy. So Stealthy? Not Sneaky? Really? Apparently, a bad occupation for Stealthy is sneaking through the King's castle.
So here is your challenge, should you choose to accept it. Rename the dwarfs. It needs to be similar to the Stealthy versus Sneaky debate. For instance, shouldn't Grumpy actually be called Cantankerous? His nickname would be Tank?
If your brain is currently snoozing, like I wish mine was, wake it up and give it a challenge.
Next week, the reindeer.
